Bedspreads & Blankets
Layering and Styling Our Cotton Bedspreads
A quilted bedspread is a piece that quietly changes the feel of a room. Folded across the bed it adds weight, warmth and a softening line. When pulled fully over the linens, it brings cohesion to the whole arrangement. We've found the most generous look comes from layering: a fine cotton bedspread or quilt over breathable sheets, finished with cushions in complementary weaves and a folded blanket within easy reach.
For a calm, composed bedroom, you might keep the bedspread and linens within the same tonal family, then introduce texture through a weave or a hand-finished trim. For something more playful, jovial prints and patterns in contrasting colours can lift and energise a room.
Either way, the bedspread is the layer that holds the whole bed together. The final, gentle touch that turns a bed into somewhere you'll happily linger. Explore our layered bedroom edit for more inspiration.
What size bedspread should I choose?
Bedspread sizing isn't always intuitive, since the right fit depends on how you'd like it to sit. For a generous, draped look that covers a folded duvet and falls close to the floor, you might consider sizing up from your mattress dimensions. For a more tailored finish that sits neatly within the bed frame, the closer size will usually work. Keep in mind that mattress depths vary considerably, which is worth checking before deciding.
Can a quilted bedspread be used instead of a duvet?
While bedspreads are intended to be used as an additional layer over a duvet, a lightly padded quilted bedspread can offer enough warmth on its own during the summer months. However, we would strongly recommend using a top sheet underneath your quilt or bedspread for ease of washing. Bedspreads are not designed to be washed weekly.
Are cotton bedspreads suitable year-round?
Yes. Cotton is a natural fibre, which makes it well suited to use across the seasons. Most of our bedspreads feature 100% cotton wadding that helps to retain heat on cooler nights while still being fully breathable. A lighter cotton bedspread, such as Eva or Clara, is often a good choice for spring or summer. Bedspreads with sateen weaves, such as Polino, can offer additional warmth in the winter.
How should a quilted bedspread be cared for?
Small marks can typically be spot cleaned using a clean, damp cloth and a small amount of mild detergent. Gently blot the area rather than rubbing, then allow it to air dry completely. When it comes to washing, as a rule, gentler is better. A cool wash, a mild detergent free of brighteners, and air drying flat where possible will all help preserve the hand of the cloth and the integrity of the quilting. However, some of our bedspreads are dry clean only. Care varies by construction and fibre, so the label on your specific piece is the most reliable guide.
What's the difference between a bedspread and a blanket?
A blanket is typically a single-layer woven piece, made using wool, cotton or a blend. It is used for warmth and easily folded across the bed or a chair. A bedspread is larger and designed to cover the whole bed, often with decorative finishing such as quilting, scalloped trims or knife pleats. Many bedrooms include both: a bedspread for finish, and a softer blanket within easy reach for cooler evenings.
