Rattan
Natural Texture for Every Room
Rattan home accessories bring warmth and character to a room in a way few other materials do. Its honeyed colour and softly-shadowed weave sit beautifully alongside linen, ceramic, dark wood, and other natural materials that share its calm, considered feel.
In the dining room, our rattan placemats and serving trays build texture into a table that feels lived-in and welcoming. In the bathroom, our rattan bins add character to the smallest details of day to day living. In the bedroom or hallway, our woven storage and laundry baskets bring order with a timeless elegance that rewards a second look.
To us, luxury rattan homeware means far more than the look of an exotic material. Our focus is on craftsmanship that holds up to years of daily use: pieces that age well and become more beautiful with time.
How should I care for rattan homeware?
Rattan looks after itself remarkably well. A regular dust with a soft, dry cloth or soft-bristled brush is usually enough. For a more thorough clean, a slightly damp cloth followed by air-drying away from direct heat works beautifully. Pieces tend to last longest when kept out of prolonged dampness and direct sunlight, and a light wipe along the grain of the weave will lift any dust caught between the fibres.
Is rattan suitable for use in the bathroom?
Our rattan bathroom accessories, including baskets, bins, and vanity trays, are designed to be used as part of your daily routines. They take the gentle humidity of a well-ventilated bathroom in their stride. Bear in mind that rattan isn't fully waterproof, so leaving pieces to sit in standing water is best avoided. A little air around each piece, and a regular wipe-down, will keep them looking beautiful for years.
What's the difference between rattan and wicker?
Rattan is a material, a vine that grows in tropical forests. Wicker is a weaving technique that can be applied to many materials, including rattan, willow, bamboo and seagrass. Most of what's called "wicker" homeware is in fact woven from rattan vines.
Will rattan baskets hold heavy items like laundry?
Yes. Rattan is one of the strongest natural fibres used in homeware. The vines are flexible and tough, and a well-woven basket easily carries the weight of a full laundry load or a heavy stack of linens. The care that goes into handweaving makes a real difference here. Tighter, more even weaves hold their shape much better across years of use.
Will rattan change colour over time?
Rattan develops a lovely patina with age and use, deepening from its initial pale honey tone into something richer and more golden. Direct sunlight can speed this process and may dry the fibres if very intense. Keeping pieces out of strong, prolonged sun helps maintain even colour. We love how rattan homeware looks after a few years of use and consider the change part of its character.
Can rattan be used outdoors?
The rattan in our homeware collection is intended for use indoors. While rattan is naturally hardy, it hasn't been treated for outdoor exposure and will fade and degrade more quickly under rain, frost and direct sun. Pieces are happiest in a sheltered porch, a conservatory, or any well-ventilated indoor space.
How does rattan compare to seagrass or bamboo?
All three are natural, woven, sustainable materials, and each has its own character. Rattan tends to have a warmer, honeyed tone and a particularly smooth, lustrous finish. Seagrass is greener and rougher to the touch, while bamboo is firmer and more architectural in its weave. Rattan is also unusually strong for its weight, which is why it lends itself so well to baskets and trays.
