Rattan

Our luxury rattan homeware is hand-woven by skilled artisans in some of the world's oldest centres of rattan craft. A naturally lustrous and fast-growing material, rattan is both gentle on the environment and remarkably hardwearing, lending itself to pieces designed for daily use and long keeping. We've sought out heritage makers who bring genuine character to every piece, and whose work supports their home communities.

From woven placemats and trays to laundry, bathroom and storage baskets, our collection of rattan home accessories brings warmth and texture to every room. Our range includes pieces that can add character to a dining table, bathroom or hallway; each piece is made from the highest quality rattan and finished by hand, with the soft variations that only artisan craftsmanship can offer.

The Craft Behind Our Rattan Home Décor

Rattan is one of the oldest natural materials in homeware, and the techniques used to weave it have been carried down through generations of artisans in the regions where rattan grows. We work with skilled makers in these traditional centres of rattan craft, where families have woven for decades and where each piece passes through many careful hands.

The vines themselves are chosen for strength and lustre. These are the finest quality natural fibres that give a piece its unique appearance, quality feel and long life. They're harvested sustainably from forests where rattan grows quickly and renews itself, then soaked, shaped and woven entirely by hand – some pieces take days or even weeks to finish.

The result is luxury rattan home décor with real provenance: unique, handcrafted pieces that are light to lift, warm to the touch, and naturally heat resistant.

Natural Texture for Every Room

Rattan home accessories bring warmth and character to a room in a way few other materials do. Its honeyed colour and softly-shadowed weave sit beautifully alongside linen, ceramic, dark wood, and other natural materials that share its calm, considered feel.

In the dining room, our rattan placemats and serving trays build texture into a table that feels lived-in and welcoming. In the bathroom, our rattan bins add character to the smallest details of day to day living. In the bedroom or hallway, our woven storage and laundry baskets bring order with a timeless elegance that rewards a second look.

To us, luxury rattan homeware means far more than the look of an exotic material. Our focus is on craftsmanship that holds up to years of daily use: pieces that age well and become more beautiful with time.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you still have some questions please do feel free to get in touch with us.

How should I care for rattan homeware?

Rattan looks after itself remarkably well. A regular dust with a soft, dry cloth or soft-bristled brush is usually enough. For a more thorough clean, a slightly damp cloth followed by air-drying away from direct heat works beautifully. Pieces tend to last longest when kept out of prolonged dampness and direct sunlight, and a light wipe along the grain of the weave will lift any dust caught between the fibres.

Is rattan suitable for use in the bathroom?

Our rattan bathroom accessories, including baskets, bins, and vanity trays, are designed to be used as part of your daily routines. They take the gentle humidity of a well-ventilated bathroom in their stride. Bear in mind that rattan isn't fully waterproof, so leaving pieces to sit in standing water is best avoided. A little air around each piece, and a regular wipe-down, will keep them looking beautiful for years.

What's the difference between rattan and wicker?

Rattan is a material, a vine that grows in tropical forests. Wicker is a weaving technique that can be applied to many materials, including rattan, willow, bamboo and seagrass. Most of what's called "wicker" homeware is in fact woven from rattan vines.

Will rattan baskets hold heavy items like laundry?

Yes. Rattan is one of the strongest natural fibres used in homeware. The vines are flexible and tough, and a well-woven basket easily carries the weight of a full laundry load or a heavy stack of linens. The care that goes into handweaving makes a real difference here. Tighter, more even weaves hold their shape much better across years of use.

Will rattan change colour over time?

Rattan develops a lovely patina with age and use, deepening from its initial pale honey tone into something richer and more golden. Direct sunlight can speed this process and may dry the fibres if very intense. Keeping pieces out of strong, prolonged sun helps maintain even colour. We love how rattan homeware looks after a few years of use and consider the change part of its character.

Can rattan be used outdoors?

The rattan in our homeware collection is intended for use indoors. While rattan is naturally hardy, it hasn't been treated for outdoor exposure and will fade and degrade more quickly under rain, frost and direct sun. Pieces are happiest in a sheltered porch, a conservatory, or any well-ventilated indoor space.

How does rattan compare to seagrass or bamboo?

All three are natural, woven, sustainable materials, and each has its own character. Rattan tends to have a warmer, honeyed tone and a particularly smooth, lustrous finish. Seagrass is greener and rougher to the touch, while bamboo is firmer and more architectural in its weave. Rattan is also unusually strong for its weight, which is why it lends itself so well to baskets and trays.
