Cotton Sateen Bed Linen

There is a particular pleasure in sateen bedding. The weight of it, the silky coolness against the skin, and the way it drapes and settles. Our cotton sateen bedding is crafted from long-staple cotton by heritage makers in Italy and Portugal. It is this combination of fibre, weave and finishing expertise that gives it its exceptional softness and durability.

Sateen's signature lies in its weave: a construction that produces a fluid, gently lustrous fabric with a cocooning drape. Our collections range from the contemporary wavy scallop of Alexandra to the timeless hemstitch of Porto and the two-corded design of Frame. Each colourway and detail is thoughtfully designed to bring joy to the everyday. Discover the collection below.

The Character of Cotton Sateen Bedding

Sateen is woven using a one-under-four-over construction. This pattern floats more yarn across the fabric's surface, creating that exquisite silky hand feel and gentle sheen. It is heavier and more fluid than percale, with a drape that moulds to the body rather than sitting crisp and flat. This is what makes sateen bed linen feel so inviting.

The unique weave of sateen is incredibly soft from the outset, and is less prone to wrinkling or creasing. It is also naturally warm to the touch, which makes it particularly well-suited for cooler climates and winter nights.

We exclusively use long-staple cotton across our sateen bed linen collection, each piece crafted by skilled weavers from the finest heritage mills in Europe. This results in a smoother, softer, more breathable and long-lasting yarn for a blissful night’s sleep.

Our Alexandra sateen bedding is Italian-woven from 400-thread-count long-staple cotton, with a hand-applied cotton bias trim and a contemporary wavy scalloped edge. It is warm and silky to the touch, with a gentle playfulness and inviting charm.

Our Frame collection, with its delicate two-cord details, is woven in Portugal from 400-thread-count Gold Seal Egyptian cotton verified by the Cotton Egypt Association. Its exquisite softness makes it a natural companion for layering with a textured bedspread or throw.

Porto cotton sateen bed linen, also Portuguese-woven from 400-thread-count Gold Seal Egyptian cotton, features an elegant hemstitch trim that sits beautifully across every colourway. It is one of our most versatile ranges, equally at home in a paired-back white bedroom or layered with richer tones.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you still have some questions please do feel free to get in touch with us.

What does sateen mean in bed linen?

Sateen describes a weave, not a fibre. It uses a one-under-four-over pattern that brings more thread to the fabric's surface, creating a silky-smooth feel with a slightly lustrous finish. Cotton sateen bedding is prized for its fluid drape and cocooning warmth. It has a very different character to the crisp, matte quality of percale, though both are woven from cotton.

Is cotton sateen bedding good for cold sleepers?

Sateen's closer weave and slightly heavier weight give it a naturally warmer feel than percale, which makes cotton sateen bed linen a particularly good choice if you tend to sleep cool or prefer a more enveloping bed. That said, because it is woven from breathable cotton, it adapts well across the seasons. Many of our customers use sateen year-round.

Why does sateen bed linen feel warmer than percale?

It comes down to the weave. Sateen's one-under-four-over construction creates a denser, closer fabric with a slightly heavier drape, which naturally retains more warmth against the body. Percale's open, one-over-one-under weave allows more air to pass through, giving it that cool, crisp feel. See our bed linen buying guide for more

Does sateen bed linen pill?

Pilling occurs when shorter fibres work loose from the fabric surface and tangle together. Because we weave our cotton sateen bedding exclusively from long-staple cotton, the fibres are less prone to this. Longer staple lengths produce a smoother, more tightly bound yarn that holds its surface well over time. With proper care, our sateen bed linen should remain smooth and pill-resistant for years.

How should I care for cotton sateen bedding?

We recommend washing at 30–40°C with a gentle detergent. Tumble drying on a low heat or air drying where possible, followed by a light iron, will help maintain the fabric's silky smoothness and gentle sheen. Bear in mind that care instructions can differ from design to design, so it is always worth checking the product label.
