How to Prepare your Bathroom for Guests

It’s approaching that time of the year when we welcome guests into our homes to celebrate the festive season together – but, of course, overnight visitors aren’t reserved for the Christmas period. The autumn months, when we all like to snuggle up indoors and create tranquil, cosy sanctuaries in our homes, are the ideal time to revitalise spaces in your home for both yourself and upcoming guests.. We’ll soon be sharing our advice for creating an inviting guest bedroom, but first let’s focus on preparing your bathroom for guests.

We all have different homes – some of us have dedicated guest bathrooms or guest bedrooms with ensuites, others may have one or two bathrooms that are shared by all. Whether you are preparing a bathroom solely for guest use, or making changes to your own bathroom to make it more welcoming to visitors, our advice below should cover all angles.

Provide high quality, sumptuously soft towels

For us, the quality of the towels in any bathroom is of the utmost importance. For a spa-like feeling, you want your towels to be sumptuously soft and marshmallow-like, providing a welcoming cocoon post-bath or shower. Our Amelia and Georgina towels are woven from the finest cotton, utilising long-staple fibres and zero-twist construction that allows them to be super soft, long-lasting and incredibly absorbent. A choice of five colours of  hand-applied trim – either straight-edged or scalloped – allows you to complement your bathroom decor. We recommend providing a variety of sizes of towels for guests – our signature Amelia and Georgina bundles contain face towels, hand towels and bath sheets; ideal for a couple of guests. Don’t forget a tufted cotton bath mat for added comfort post-bath or shower.

Consider the small touches

It’s such a lovely feeling to arrive as a guest at a friend or family member’s home and have access to everything you need without needing to ask. If you have a dedicated guest bathroom, stock it with everything your visitors may need during their stay: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap etc. If your guests will be using your own main bathroom, replenish your beauty and skincare products and place them where your guests will easily find them.

Provide a hotel-like experience

We love the idea of making your guests feel like they are staying in a high-end hotel. Place a small rattan basket on a vanity in the bathroom, filled with items for them to use during their stay. This could be personal to your guests if you know there’s a particular product they love, or it could be standardised. Consider things such as a wooden toothbrush and a travel-sized tube of Marvis toothpaste, lavender pillow spray and a silk eye mask, an artisan soap and small hand cream.

Make your guests feel at home

Think back to your own visits to other people’s houses. Which home comforts have you missed and were there any unexpected touches that helped to make you feel at home? One luxury we would recommend providing for your guests would be a soft and cosy towelling robe and a pair of slippers – not only will they feel comfortable and relaxed, but they won’t have to worry about dashing back to their bedroom wrapped in a towel.

Introduce foliage

A couple of healthy plants dotted around a bathroom adds colour and texture, while also acting as natural air purifiers. Our brass basket planter is the perfect contrast to green leaves and adds a touch of elegance to your bathroom. We also love to welcome guests by placing a small vase of fresh flowers on a vanity or on a window sill. Our Emily bud vases are ideal for small spaces, while our Pandora hand blown vase can be used for slightly larger displays.

Create a space for relaxation, not just function

Consider any small changes you could make for the bathroom to feel like a space for unwinding and relaxing, not just a functional room. Make your guests want to spend time soaking in the bath or luxuriating in their beauty regimes. Is there space to add a small armchair or even a cushioned stool? Could you provide an aromatherapy diffuser or scented candles? If the room has a bath, add a bath tray where you can place items such as serums, elixirs, oil and salts to encourage long, indulgent soaks. We also like the idea of adding a small pile of books and magazines beside the bath, tailored towards your guest’s tastes.
