European linens will last a lifetime, so don't just save them for best. In order to maintain an enduring lifespan it is important not to over-wash your linens. Read on for our top tips for washing linens.

  • Linens release stains very well, however, more pigmented stains can be pre-treated by blotting with white vinegar and baking soda before washing.
  • For red wine stains, sprinkle on some salt to prevent the stain penetrating further into the fibres.
  • Soak stains as soon as you can as this will help them release efficiently once washed.
  • For particulary dark stains, you may need to use a readily available chemical stain treatment. We would recommend always testing this on an inconspicuous area before proceeding as they can remove colour.
  • Never use bleach on your linens. Instead brighten up your linens by hanging them out to dry in the sun. Plus, nothing compares to the smell of fresh laundry that’s been hanging outside to dry!

Most linens can be washed at 30 degrees - a cool wash is often enough to remove most light staining.

For white and natural linens you may want to wash on a higher temperature. For this we recommend temperatures up to 60 or even 90 degrees. It is important to note that washing frequently over a long period will weaken the fibres.

  • To avoid product build up use a sparing amount of detergent.
  • Avoid using detergent with optical brightening agents or products containing chlorine. Linen naturally gets softer with every wash, so there is no need to use any type of fabric softener.
  • For best results, ensure linens are unfolded before washing and keep your load fairly small to allow each piece to be evenly cleaned.
  • Linen is naturally very fast drying, do not tumble dry.
  • Tumble drying can lead to shrinkage.
  • Air drying your linens is best - outside in the summer breeze or hanging indoors will give the best results.
  • Dampen linen when ironing
  • Use your iron on a medium heat, with steam
  • Use starch to keep table linens crisp, wrinkle free and protected from stains.
  • Store linens in a cool, dry place.
  • Don't store in plastic as this can cause yellowing of the linens.
  • To reduce wrinkles store linens rolled, rather than folded where possible.
